Vitamin C and Cardiovascular Health

Is Vitamin C useful in Cardiovascular diseases?
Linus Pauling's specific therapy for cardiovascular and heart diseases was high dosages of two essential nutrients: Vitamin C and the amino acid lysine.
There are evidences of low plasma level of Vitamin C in patients with heart and vascular failure.
In a big analysis thorough 278,459 participants, the relationship of Vitamin C and cardiovascular diseases is explored as follows (1):
Relative risk of CHD (Coronary heart disease) was 0.93 (95% CI: 0.86–1.00) for those consuming three to five servings per day, and 0.83 (95% CI: 0.77–0.89) for those consuming more than five servings per day.
In another clinical study on CVD (cardiovascular disease), patients who received Vitamin C showed a reduction in the arterial stiffness (2).

How Vitamin C could help Cardiovascular health?
Vitamin C could help Heart and Vascular system by metabolic balancing and regulation of lipid metabolism. It is well established that Vitamin C inhibits oxidation of LDL-protein (1).
Oxidized LDL has a greater tendency in attachment to scavenger receptors on the endothelial of arteries. And so, Vitamin C can decrease the risk of artery hardening (atherosclerosis) by inhibition of lipid attachment to the arteries (2).
Also Vitamin C is able to prevent apoptosis (programmed cell death) of vascular smooth muscle cells, through it can help keeping formed plaques in the arteries more stable and prevention of plaque detachment and running in the blood stream and increasing the ischemic disorders as heart attack or stroke (3).

How much Vitamin C should be taken to help Cardiovascular health?
Based on some clinical practice, the recommended dose of vitamin C for its possible benefits in CVD patients is at least 500–1000 mg per day.
